Women Military Veterans Speak on Sexual Harassment and Assault
The disappearance of 20-year-old soldier Vanessa Guillén began badly and ended horribly worse. She vanished on an April Sunday, in broad daylight, from Fort Hood, the third-largest Army base in the country. Her family would later say she spoke of being sexually harassed at the Texas installation, and of being afraid to report it. For as long as women have been legally admitted into the military, in the 1940s, discrimination, harassment and assault have haunted the armed services without relief. #InsideEdition

Why Do So Many Sexual Assaults in the U.S. Military Go Unpunished? | NYT Opinion
Service members are more likely to be assaulted by a fellow soldier than shot by an enemy at war. The crisis persists because of an archaic set of rules that gives commanders control over whether perpetrators are prosecuted. In this video guest essay, a Republican senator, a former military prosecutor and a survivor argue that sexual assault cases should be handled by independent, specialized prosecutors.

Protect Our Defenders Foundation is a human rights organization. We honor, support and give voice to the brave women and men in uniform who have been raped or sexually assaulted by fellow service members. We seek to fix the military training, investigation and adjudication systems for sexual harassment, assault and rape --systems which often re-victimize assault survivors by blaming them and failing to prosecute perpetrators.
